Born Sarah Anne Callies on June 1, 1977 in La Grange, Illinois, Callies moved to Honolulu, Hawaii with her family when she was one. Throughout her youth, Callies expressed an interest in acting through participating in various school plays at Punahou School.
While her parents are professors at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, Callies did not follow in their footsteps. Instead, she chose to pursue a career in acting. After graduating from high school, Callies entered Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. In conjunction with her studies, she continued her involvement in theatre. In 1999, she graduated with an undergraduate emphasis in Feminist Studies and a Senior Fellowship in Indigenous Studies. Callies continued her education at Denver's National Theater Conservatory where she obtained her Master of Fine Arts degree in 2002.
Callies' first role on television was as "Kate O'Malley", a recurring role on Queens Supreme. Her first starring role was as "Detective Jane Porter" on Tarzan, a short-lived Warner Bros. television series.
After making various guest appearances on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Dragnet and NUMB3RS, Callies landed a starring role on Fox's Prison Break as "Dr. Sara Tancredi". Alongside her television projects, Callies has also starred in two feature films - Universal Pictures' Whisper and an independent, The Celestine Prophecy.
On June 21, 2002, Callies married Josh Winterhalt, whom she met at Dartmouth College. They moved to New York City where she got her first television role on NBC's Queens Supreme. On January 23, 2007, Callies' publicist announced that the couple are expecting their first child.

  • The meaning of Sarah:The name Sarah creates the urge to understand others, but we emphasize that it causes procrastination, lack of confidence, and the inability to realize your goals. The name Sarah gives the ability to understand people and to merge conflicting viewpoints to create harmony in association. You dislike facing issues or witnessing hurt feelings. You make friends easily but must guard against becoming involved in the affairs of others or being too easily led. You could do well working with the public giving advice, where you can use your skills in diplomacy in handling people, but where you are not under pressure or required to carry responsibility and make decisions.
  • The meaning of Wayne:Although the name Wayne creates the urge to be reliable and responsible, we emphasize that it causes a restless intensity that defies relaxation. This name, when combined with the last name, can frustrate happiness, contentment, and success, as well as cause health weaknesses in the solar plexus, and through worry and mental tension. The name of Wayne creates a restless, creative nature that takes you into many ventures, but does not allow you to see things through to a satisfactory completion. Yours is a versatile, musical, artistic, but independent nature and you must have the freedom to express your creative ideas and abilities to be happy. An urge for independence causes dissatisfaction and frustration in close relationships and you find the "ties that bind" restricting. The qualities of this name would find a more constructive outlet in work that involves high-pressure selling or promotional activities, possibly in community affairs, for it contains a positive, driving power.

Quotes
  • Sarah: (What grabbed her attention about Dr. Sara Tancredi) When I was originally sent the Pilot script, they just said, "Read it and think about which women you could play, and audition for the one you like." They were pretty surprised when I picked the smallest part in the entire Pilot. I really felt strongly that Sara must have a million layers to her. She seemed so protected by her sense of humor, wit, and irony. I thought she would become more and more interesting the more I spent with her. Sometimes, you get characters who are more on the nose- what you see it what you get. That seems less exciting, less challenging to me.
  • Sarah: (on being the only woman in “Prison Break”) I grew up with two stepbrothers and their friends, and every time you walked into the house there were eight guys gathered around with pizza, so I’m pretty used to it. I feel fortunate, though, that the guys are as kind as they are. They’re very sweet now that I’m pregnant - (they say), “You should sit down”, and “Do you want some milk?” Except Dominic. He has so many kids of his own, he’s like, “She’s fine!”
  • Sarah: (Referring to the people who she saw when she visited a maximum security prison) I developed a lot of compassion for the people there.
  • Sarah: (on what season 3 of Prison Break will be like for her character) Sara ends up turning into somebody she didn't think she could be and I think that third season for her is going to be a lot about reckoning with those actions.
  • Sarah: (on the last few episodes of Prison Break's second season) The last three? The cast; it's getting smaller which I wish it was not
